SAQA Ohio Member Jen Siegrist to Exhibit

Member Jen Siegrist has has had her work selected for inclusion in OHIOCENTRIC, an exhibition in honor of the Columbus Bicentennial at City Center Gallery. The gallery celebrates its city by featuring 51 artists whose works collectively create a momentary snapshot of Ohio's unique reflection. The exhibition will display 63 works of art by Ohio artists based in areas in and outside of Ohio, including Columbus, Whipple, Milford, Athens, Pennsylvania, Chicago and New York.

The exhibition runs from Saturday February 18 through Saturday March 14, 2012
The opening Reception is Saturday February 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Operated and juried entirely by OSU students, City Center Gallery grants funding to selected artists or artist groups to realize creative endeavors that conclude in a month long exhibition at the entrance of the OSU Urban Arts Space. The space is located in the historic Lazarus Building in downtown Columbus. Exhibitions and events are free and open to all.

SAQA Ohio Member Jancy McClellan-Ryan in the News

SAQA Ohio member, Jancy McClellan-Ryan has been gaining a lot of notoriety of late. Her piece, Haiti Girl: Where were you before? was featured in the October/November issue of Quilters Newsletter magazine. In addition, she has been notified of acceptance into the OH+5 2012 at The Dairy Barn in Athens,Ohio. She is also currently showing 35 pieces of her textile art at Vino Where You Live, a very unusual venue in a large house that has been converted into a wine bar and wine shop. The shop hosts a variety of interesting events. On December 17, 2011 Dessert Wars will take place. The venue gave samples of their dessert wines to a variety of local businesses and assigned them the task of creating the perfect dessert pairing for the wine. Customers will be taste testing and voting for their favorites. In addition to live music, Jancy will be there on the 17th to meet and greet art, dessert and wine aficionados. Let's support Jancy and imbibe in a little wine and dessert too. Very festive for the season. Congratulations Jancy!! You are one busy artist!

SAQA Ohio Member Exhibits her Spiritual Works

"Envisioning the Word," an exhibition of spiritually expressive work by award-winning artist, Linda Witte Henke, is on display through November 19, 2011 at Christ Church, 600 North Ford Road in Zionsville, Indiana. Please call 317-873-3242 to inquire about exhibition hours.

A meet-the-artist reception is scheduled for 6 to 8 PM on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Christ Church. The public is invited to visit the exhibition and be in conversation with the artist about her work.

Henke creates mixed-media art expressive of spiritual themes, sacred texts, and theological reflections. Her Envisioning the Word collection features more than 50 works that explore biblical texts and themes, from Genesis through Revelation. The exhibition is sponsored by the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Henke's work is displayed in juried solo, group, and invitational exhibitions in Europe, Asia, and North America, where her work also resides in parish, corporate, and private collections. In addition to her exhibited work, Henke maintains a full schedule of commissioned projects, most of which are purposed for liturgical use. Additional information about her work is available at

Henke is a graduate of Jane Dunnewold's Art Cloth Mastery Program in San Antonio, TX, and is currently engaged in Dunnewold's Advanced Independent Study Program; she also holds master's degrees in journalism and theology.

Maria Elkins http://www.mariaelkins.com has received notification that she has won one of the eight big prizes at The International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas for her piece, Windblown. The exact prize is still a mystery. This piece is a whole cloth quilt that features a friend of her two daughters with lovely red hair. Maria included a reference to traditional quilting in the quilted motif of the the sky in this work. She featured the Windblown Star Block from Barbara Brackman's book, Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. The quilt is painted with Tsukineko all purpose inks mixed with Jacquard colorless extender. Congratulations Maria!
Linda Witte Henke http://www.lindahenke.com recently completed a liturgical commission for a set of summer-weight vestments, titled, "Consider the Lilies." The design employs the colors of the summer landscape to give visual expression to Jesus' words in Luke 12:27. The design motif was pieced from a variety of fabrics, colors, and textures, banded with gold piping, mounted on a background of green dupioni, and embellished with improvisational stitching. The vestments were designed to coordinate with the worship space in which they will be used.

The article features a little quilted calendar cover for the annual AQS spiral bound engagement calendar that features 54 quilts. Beth shared this little beauty at a SAQA Ohio Parlor meeting last spring in Columbus. The cover features Cherrywood cotton fabrics enhanced with Shiva Artist's paint sticks and machine quilting. Way to go Beth!

I've sewn for 60 years or so and began art quilting about 5 years ago.

My art usually has a great deal of embellishment and fabric manipulation.

In my sewing room.

My work is mostly done for enjoyment and for the possible teaching of classes. I try to display at at least one Ohio show a year and one California show a year

Do you teach, lecture or make a business out of your art?

Yes, I teach and lecture, but I do not want to make a business out of my art.

Susan Shie to Hold Solo Exhibition

SAQA Ohio member, Susan Shie will be holding a solo exhibition in Orrville, Ohio this month. The event features Susan's drawings of her Orrville childhood as well as paintings and drawings of her granddaughter, Eva Miller. She will also exhibit some of her art quilts including her most recent work from the Kitchen Tarot series entitled, Royal Wedding: King of the Potholders.

The opening reception will be held on July 28, 2011 from 6 to 8 PM at the Heartland Community Center located at 200 N. Main St. in Orrville, Ohio. The building sits on the corner of Main and Water Streets. Light snacks and beverages will be served and the house cafe will be open for meal purchases.

A I have been sewing since the age of three. I have been quilting for thirteen years and making art quilts for 7 years.

A I am mainly inspired by the natural world, but moving more towards art and images that invoke thought and conversation.

A I'd love to have a regular gallery show. Not just one for fiber art but to truly have my textile art gain acceptance as an art form.

A I teach people who say they aren't artistic. I do compete nationally, and the bulk of my business is in custom work.

SAQA Ohio Cinncinati Parlor Meeting

On Saturday, June 18, 2011 seventeen SAQA Ohio members and guests convened at The West Chester Library near Cinncinnati for a parlor meeting. The hostess was Carole Staples of West Chester who did a magnificent job booking the beautiful venue, organizing an agenda and making everyone feel welcomed. Thank You Carole! Group members engaged in a meet and greet session, shared a fabulous carry in luncheon and listened to a presentation by Sue King about the highlights of The SAQA Visioning Conference in Denver. This was followed by the documentary Stitches, then a show and tell presentation by members and guests bringing work along to share. The event concluded with a swap of miniature quilts. Sue King and Terry Ann Hartzell Attend Visioning Converence in Denver

On May 19, 2011 Sue King and Terry Ann Hartzell flew to the Mile High City, Denver, Colorado to attend the four day SAQA Visioning Conference which was held in the Brown Hotel of Unsinkable Molly Brown fame. Sue attended a meeting of approximately 20 other SAQA reps to learn about activities taking place in other states and countries. She was pleased to learn that Ohio is now almost on par with some of the other states that are quite active.

Key note speakers included Luana Rubin, the founder of eQuilter.com and Dr. Alice Zrebiec, the textiles curator of the Denver Art Museum. The Front Range Quilters of Colorado acted as hostesses for the event, which included studio tours and a panel discussion by Deidre Adams, Patty Hawkins, Carol Watkins and Charlotte Ziebarth. These artists shared some of their favorite techniques, especially photography, and discussed how living in the West has influenced their work.

Another panel presentation involved a discussion of three dimensional work and included artists Susan Else, Mary Beth Bellah, Carolyn Crump and Jill Rumoshosky. On Thursday evening a cocktail party feted the opening of the SAQA Trunk Show which was spectacular and will be travelling the country this year. We have requested the show for Ohio members to view, so if you know of a venue willing to exhibit the show for at least a three to four week time period, please contact Sue King.

Carole Waugh's Studio at the Ice Cube Gallery

Terry Ann and Sue attended numerous break out sessions with titles such as Make Adobe Photoshop Elements Dance, Promote Your Work Without Apologizing, Rejected:Common Mistakes When Entering Juried Shows and Self Promotion with Pizazz. There were also sessions to assist SAQA members in writing articles for magazines and making a living by presenting workshops and teaching. Terry and Sue also toured the Denver Art Museum and enjoyed walking throughout the downtown area, viewing the prolific public art and of course shopping in a variety of boutiques. A high light was the tour to Golden Colorado where we visited the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum to view a stunning exhibition of the work of the Front Range Quilters. We additionally met our National SAQA leadership including Martha Sielman and Patricia Gould. Everyone was friendly and quite approachable. We also met some of the big name quilters in America and found them to be just as nice and willing to share. We both heartily recommend that SAQA Ohio members attend next year's convention which will take place in Philadelphia.

The art quilts of Ohio SAQA members Jennifer Solon and Anne French (new member) will be included in the 4th Annual Fiber Art Show at The 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, Ohio on June 4th and 5th, 2011. This show is a showcase of innovative uses of fiber media that include art quilts, needle arts, wearable art, experimental fiber, textile collage and weaving. In addition to a juried art exhibit, the Fiber Art Show is a two-day celebration of all things fiber related and fun for the whole family! Here are some of the highlights:

SAQA Ohio Member Beth Schillig Wins AQS Contest

Beth Schillig (Columbus, Ohio) was a winner in the recent Mystery Quilt Contest sponsored by the American Quilt Society. The contest began in the September 2010 issue of American Quilter Magazine and started with 7-8" square focus blocks. Beth used a picture of a sunrise over Lake Erie in Marblehead, Ohio and ran it through the Kaleidoscope Kreator Program. She used batiks from her stash, followed the remaining instructions in future magazine issues, and created, " A MORNING IN MARBLEHEAD." Call for Entry Taiwan Show
SAQA Members have and opportunity to show their work in an exceptional exhibition in Taiwan in 2012. Taiwan representative, Hsin-Chen Lin, is also the president of TIQE, and the first festival she organized in 2009 was wonderful. The exhibition was very well received and the catalog is gorgeous. The 2012 exhibition will be from August to July and the theme is Moving Water and Rivers, with and emphasis on the life-giving and precious nature of water on earth and the crucial environmental relationship we have with water.

Water and river are full of life and nutrient: novelty, freshness, and sustainability symbolize a source of vitality, expecting to convey an energetic, broad, and microcosmic angle of view, as well as each kind of life and existence that water and river embrace.

SAQA Ohio Cincinnati Parlour Meeting Saturday June 18, 2011

SAQA Ohio member, Carole Staples, will be hosting a Parlour Meeting for SAQA Ohio members at the West Chester Library, 9363 Centre Point Drive, West Chester, Ohio 45069, phone 513-777-3131. The event will take place from 11 AM to 3 PM. To date, the agenda will include a presentation on the SAQA Visioning Conference, a Show and Tell Session, a quilt swap, and tentatively scheduled is the unveiling of The SAQA Trunk Show exhibition.

Members may bring guests, but seating is limited to 50 so please make a reservation with Carole at cg_staples@hotmail.com to reserve a seat. Attendees are asked to bring a food item to share for a potluck luncheon, examples of their work to share with the group, and a 5" x 7" mini quilt that somehow incorporates a symbol of friendship to swap.

Ann Rebele to Exhibit in Coshocton

It seems that Ohio is the place to be this year if you have an interest in textiles.

The work of SAQA Ohio member, Ann Rebele, will be included in PUSHING THE SURFACE 2011, which will take place at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum in Coschocton, Ohio. The exhibition runs from May 21 - August 7, 2011 with the Artist's Reception occurring on May 20th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The Crooked River Fiber Fling is set to to take place in Peninsula, Ohio from August 4-7, 2011. This event will include classes and workshops on weaving, knitting, traditional basketry, quilting with metal and fiber, marbling on cloth and beginning spinning. There will also be a wearable art fashion show, boutique and vendor booths, children's events and animal tents featuring llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats and rabbits. For an additional thrill, visitors can arrive at the event by riding the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which will have a special car dedicated to demonstrating fiber art techniques. Art Quilt Events in Zanesville

The Zanesville Museum of Art proudly announces several art quilt events to be held at the museum beginning in May 2011. ART WATCH takes place on Saturday, May 14 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Quilts, demonstrations, and talks by Ohio quilters: Deborah Melton Anderson, Sue Cavanaugh, Sandra Ciolino, Rebecca Cross, Nancy Crow, Linda French and June O'Neil will take place at this FREE event. This is the second in a series of four unique Arts Alive Art Watch events funded by PNC Arts Alive.

Superlatives: Contemporary Ohio Quilts will also be featured at the Zanesville Museum of Art. This event will feature six acclaimed Ohio artists and will be on exhibition from May 14 through July 14, 2011.

IQF Cinncinati 2011 and Other Breaking News

The International Quilt Festival changed venues this year, moving from Chicago to Cincinnati. From all accounts, it was quite a success. SAQA was well represented with two exhibitions: Creative Force and Sightlines, which featured SAQA Ohio member, Shelley Brenner Baird's work, Seeing Around Corners. In addition, Susan Shie, SAQA Ohio member, had a solo exhibition of her distinctive and world renown work. Carole Staples, another of our Ohio members also had a booth, selling her fabulous textile art. Way to go Carole!

SAQA Ohio members were extremely well represented among the volunteers that manned the booth for the four days of the show and included: Dr. Mazloomi, Terry Ann Hartzell, Mindy Marik, Barb Sferra, Martha Warsaw, Carol Staples, Maxine Thomas, Lisa Quintana, Shelly Brenner Baird, Linda Witte Henke and Sue King. A great big thank you to all of you for your hard work in making the show a successful one for our organization.

Many other members stopped by to say hello. In addition to our members, the booth was graced with visits from some pretty important members of the art quilt community including Pokey Bolton from Quilting Arts Magazine, Susan Shie, Jamie Fingal and Cheryl Ferrin, SAQA Marketing Director, who lent her technical expertise and support throughout the show. She even hosted a party in her room on Saturday night.

During the show SAQA sold a total of $ 4846.00 in merchandise and memberships and helped to educate the public about art quilts and the SAQA mission. A total of 27 new members joined our organization and 12 of these are from Ohio, so our membership role is growing.

Shelley Brenner Baird, SAQA Ohio member and featured artist in Quilting Arts Magazine and SAQA's Sightlines Exhibition, will be hosting an open studio in her home for SAQA Ohio members on Saturday April 30, 2011. The event will take place in Columbus, Ohio from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Members are asked to bring snacks or drinks to share with other attendees. Paula Nadelstern Exhibition Coming to Ohio

Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern will be on exhibition at the Akron Art Museum, Karl and Bertl Arnstein Galleries, from June 18, 2011 to October 2, 2011. The museum is located at One South High, Akron Ohio 44308.

For internationally renowned quiltmaker Paula Nadelstern the word kaleidoscope"promises surprise and magic, change and chance." Nadeslstern (born 1951) has spent over two decades capturing in cloth the excitement of the ever-changing relationships of color, pattern, light and texture of kaleidoscope images.

Nadelstern's dazzling quilts employ crystalline patterns composed of painstakingly assembled slivers of jewel-like fabrics. Her creations encompass science, history and artistic tradition, This exhibition places the artist's quilts within a historical context for the first time, exploring the kaleidoscope's impact on the decorative arts, including quilts, and the intimate relationship between Nadelstern's quilts and the art of the contemporary kaleidoscope.

The original inspiration for Nadelstern's kaleidoscopic quilts came from the bilateral symmetry of the design on a bolt of Liberty of London fabric. This type of imagery was unimagined before the invention of the kaleidoscope in 1816 by Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster. The device reached American shores by 1818 but not until the 1870s were significant refinements made by Charles G. Bush.

The potential of the kaleidoscope as a design source for decorative applications was immediately recognized and its abstractions had a particularly profound effect on quilt making. In this exhibition an early 19th century star pattern quilt joins 19 contemporary quilts and 12 kaleidoscope quilt blocks by Paula Nadelstern; contemporary kaleidoscopes; and two rare early kaleidoscopes, one patented by Brewster and one by Bush. Akron will be the only Midwest venue for this stunning exhibition.

Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art 0f Paula Nadelstern is organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York. The tour of the exhibition is supported in part by the Leir Charitble Foundations in memory of Henry J. and Erna D. Leir, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and with public funds from the New York Sate Council on the Art, a state agency.

Dayton, Ohio Parlour Meeting Held in January

On Saturday, January 8, 2011, twenty-seven SAQA Ohio members and their guests met in Beavercreek, a suburb of Dayton, for a Parlour Meeting. The event was hosted by well known quilt artist and SAQA Ohio member, Maria Elkins and her charming daughter. The event combined members from the Southwest and Central Ohio regions of Ohio. In many cases, this was the first time that members had had the opportunity to meet each other. A spectacular "show and tell" session served to introduce members and their work. In addition, Maria and her daughter provided a wonderful selection of snacks and beverages and attendees were able to network and share resources. A small selection of photos of the event were shared by member Terry Ann Hartzell. Unfortunately, artists names and titles of work were not available at press time. If your work is represented, please comment on the blog and identify yourself and the name of your art quilt. To date, parlour meetings have been held in Central Ohio and Southwest Ohio. How about it Cleveland? Any volunteers to get a group together in the Northeast?

Our very own Shelley Brenner Baird is one of 10 featured SAQA artists selected to participate in the Sightlines Exhibition sponsored by SAQA. Her piece is also featured in the beautiful hard cover book of the same name, available at the SAQA bookstore. It is unique in that it features a "centerfold" of all the works in the exhibition. Art Quilts by Sue King Included in Columbus Exhibition

SAQA Ohio member, Sue King, has three pieces included in the "Small Works" exhibition at The Roy G Biv Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. The gallery will feature artwork that measures 12" x 12" or less from December 4 to December 18, 2010. Opening night coincides with the December Gallery Hop in the Short North and will take place from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The gallery is located at 997 North High St., Columbus, Ohio 43201. SAQA Ohio Regional Meeting Held November 20, 2010 in Westerville

Over twenty-five SAQA Ohio members and their guests gathered in Westerville, Ohio on November 20, 2010 for the Ohio Regional Meeting. Members were able to network, exchange ideas and business cards and view each other's work.

Homemade breakfast food was shared as a way to break the ice and get to know one another.
While participants relished these goodies, a Show and Tell Session took place and everyone was able to present their work to the group as well as give some background information about themselves and their art.

Through the generosity of our membership, three member/presenters spoke to the group on various textile related topics. Shelley Brenner Baird provided a very thought provoking PowerPoint presentation on her textile career, including a progression of her work spanning the last thirty years. She also brought examples of her art and discussed dyeing methods as well as the use of thermofax screening.

The group continued to get to know each other while eating box lunches catered by Panera Breads. The next presentation was given by Dee Dadik and Molly Butler, certified Textile Appraisers, on the importance of having art quilts appraised. They were also able to give members tips on safe shipping techniques and insurance.

The last presenter of the day was Terry Ann Hartzell who provided a power point presentation that focused on the use of technology in quilt design. The talk illustrated how to incorporate good design principles, use technology to catalog inspiration, and techniques for making patterns. Also covered were ideas to help artists organize their work and tips on preventing violation of the copy right laws.

The meeting ended with a plenary session. Members engaged in a brainstorming process to develop a 2011 plan of action. The top three interests expressed by the group were: 1.) holding quarterly meetings 2.) organizing a SAQA Ohio Exhibition, perhaps in conjunction with an adjoining state and 3.) organizing critique groups. Other ideas included sponsoring workshops and lectures, encouraging regionalized parlour meetings, working with colleges and museums to promote art quilts and studio tours.

The meeting concluded with announcements and door prizes. Evaluations were distributed and the results, I am proud to announce were purely positive. Members seemed very excited about the opportunity to meet each other and are very much looking forward to our next get together. So, if you were unable to attend last weekend, plans are in the works for a second meeting to take place this spring. A big thank you to everyone that made this event a success, including those that brought food, helped set up or tear down, register attendees and of course a great big thank you to our presenters who graciously donated their expertise to the group. A special thank you goes out to Susan Holmes of theThe Nelsonville Quilt Company for donating a $20.00 gift certificate as a door prize and to Dee Dadik and Molly Butler who donated a free textile appraisal valued at $40.00

SAQA Members Shine at Cleveland Show

Two SAQA Ohio members hailing from the Cleveland area, Helen Murrell and Carole Richburg Brown, were featured winners at The Reflections of Nature Quilt Show at Rocky River Metro Park in North Olmstead on November 13 and 14, 2010. Sponsored by The Cleveland Metro Parks, this annual event features quilts that focus on the beauty of nature.

Helen Murrell's quilt, "Seedlings" won third place in the small quilt category. She stated that her quilt represents growth. It began in a class with quilt artist Carol Taylor and incorporated many of the new techniques she learned along with her own design elements. The green fabric in the center was her beginning inspiration and reminds Helen of new sprouting plants. During the quilt's construction, her 4 year old grandson developed a fascination for seeds and he kept Helen busy locating new seeds for him to add to his plant collection. This kept Helen focused on thoughts of new beginnings, growth and the unfurling of leaves in seedling plants during the construction of this beautiful work of art.

Carole Richburg Brown's quilt, "A Delicate Balance, "won the Judges' Choice Award.

Carole's quilt was created in conjunction with a project that involved the Textile Art Alliance. Artists were allowed to choose a small piece of fabric that was donated by The Cleveland Museum of Textile Art Division to use as inspiration in the creation of a new work of art. Carole incorporated an 18th century textile from China into her work.

The SAQA Ohio booth was manned by Terry Ann Hartzell, SAQA member from
the Loudenville area and Sue King, Ohio SAQA Representative from Lancaster.

The SAQA Ohio booth was visited by quilters and members of the general public who were quite interested in our mission. Four new memberships were sold and many visitors stopped by to learn about our organization.

SAQA Ohio Member, Beth Schillig, Featured in National Magazine

International Quilt Festival - Quilt Scene is a recently released magazine by Quilting Arts. It is the second annual issue showcasing some of the quilts in the special exhibits on display at the Houston show last week. The annual IQA judged show, "Quilts: A World of Beauty," is one of the most revered international quilt competitions. This year 665 quilts were entered into the 23 categories and 377 were juried into the show.

Out of those 377 quilts, twenty were chosen to be showcased in the magazine. Our very own Beth Schillig's work, JEEPERS...It's Jane! was among those chosen! Beth is a new member of SAQA and feels extremely honored to have her quilt showcased along with artists such as Ricky Tims, Denise Halan, Sharon Schamber, Gloria and Hansen and others. Congratulations Beth!! We are so proud to have you as a member of SAQA Ohio.

Central Ohio Parlor Meeting Held October 30, 2010

Central Ohio SAQA members joined the likes of SAQA members in Washington DC and other regions by hosting the first ever SAQA Ohio Parlor meeting on October 30, 2010 in the home of Sue King in Lancaster, Ohio.

Terry Ann Hartzell, has her work on exhibit in numerous SAQA shows as well as the Rustex Show. She will present on the use of computer technology in art quilts.

SAQA Ohio State Meeting

Mark your calendar, you won't want to miss The First Annual SAQA Ohio State meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 2010. The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at The Westerville Public Library in Westerville, Ohio. You will have the opportunity to meet other individuals interested in the world of art quilts.

The town is quaint and charming, with lots of interesting little shops, and beautiful Inniswood Metro Park is nearby. If you are coming in from out of town, you will be happy to learn that it is only a short drive to Easton Towne Center, a leading shopping experience in the Columbus metro area. Maybe you would like to spend the night and do some shopping. I am able to accommodate several people in my home if anyone needs a place to stay, or I will be happy to provide a list of possible accommodations.

Dee Dadik, SAQA Ohio Member, and Certified Appraiser of Quilted Textiles, along with her friend Molly Butler, will be giving a presentation on art quilt appraisals. She has appraised quilts for Quilt National and QSDS, so you won't want to miss her presentation. In addition, there will be a show and tell session, plenary session and some fun give a ways. I am working on additional speakers, so stay posted for more details as they develop. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer, or have ideas that will make this a great event.

Ohio Desinger Craftsmen is currently featuring the art quilts of South African artist, Odette Tolksdorfe from September 12 to October 31, 2010. Also on exhibit, Dichotomies in Objects, Contemporary South African Studio Jewelry from the Stellenboch Area.

Ms. Tolksdorfe lives in Durban, on the East Coast of South Africa and states that her work,"is influenced by the multi-layered African environment and other personal influences." Her work is on exhibit at:

Beth states that this was the second year for the Sew Batik Challenge at the NQA Show. The challenge fabric was a green batik with leaves randomly spread all over it. Beth used a double batting and heavily quilted around the leaves, which made it look almost like Trapunto. The navy section of the background was quilted with green variegated YLI thread to look like lattice work. The flower is a purchased hand dyed wool.

Beth loves batik fabrics. She collects them as often as she can and used about 90 different fabrics in this piece. The background was composed of traditional piecing and the flowers were paper pieced. Then they were embellished with Texture Magic, couched with the machine fringe foot and hand beaded. Beth's favorite thing is freehand quilting and she added lots of it to the background of this piece. She quilts on her home Bernina and also owns a George, which is a long arm head from APQS that is mounted in a cabinet. Beth is able to sit at the machine just like a regular home machine, but it has a 21" throat space.

International Expressions Quilt Art

For the first time in the United States, International Arts and Artists introduces the work of Quilt Art, a unique group of 22 contemporary quilt artists from nine countries whose work ranges from traditional quilting techniques to modern methods of photo transfer and improvisation. Quilt Art is Europe's leading advocacy group for innovative quilt making.

The "International Expressions" exhibition features more than 35 quilts that include landscape scenes, still lifes, geometric constructions and abstract juxtapositions of color and form. While each member brings a distinctive approach to the medium, a reflection of their home countries' culture, geography and design traditions can also be discovered in the work.

The Quilt Art group has established a reputation for being at the forefront of contemporary textile art by maintaining integrity of expression and quality craftsmanship. The group has exhibited extensively in Europe since 1987, and more recently in Japan and Canada. Included in this exhibition are works by Linda Colsh (Belgium) and Inge Huber (Germany).

The exhibition will be on display June 12 through August 28. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission for non-members is $5.

Our very own Susan Nash of Zanesville is exibiting her work at the Zanesville Museum of Art, now through June 19, 2010. The title of the show is Art Quilts and Textiles by Susan Nash. Susan uses hand dyes, batiks and a blending of other fabrics to interpret the natural world in her textile pieces. She also utilizes fibers, beads and found objects to help in the translation. There is still time to see this exhibit and a trip to Zanesville would be a great way to support one of our members.

Ohio SAQA Members, Debra Lunn and Michael Mrowka Lecture on Batiks

On June 27, 2010 , Michael and Debra of Lunn Studios presented a lecture on the design and production of their exclusive batiks at Olivedale Senior Center in Lancaster, Ohio. Michael and Debra are internationally known batik artists who started up a batik manufacturing business on the island of Java in Indonesia several years ago. They design and manufacture approximately 600 batiks a year.

Michael stated that it takes about 2oo weaving machines to produce enough cotton fabric each year to supply the production of Artisan Batiks. All of the batiks are handmade outdoors in the very hot and humid environment close to the equator, which actually helps to heat set the dyes. The facility employs well over 200 local workers and Debra and Michael take their commitment to the community seriously. They live, eat and work with their employees and attend ceremonial events such as engagement parties, weddings, funerals and other events. They have constructed a dedicated water treatment plant to ensure that they are not polluting the environment.

In addition, they recycle much of the wax used in the production of their famous line of batiks. A strict quality control process is a part of the production, and fabric that does not meet their high standards is used to sew shirts for employee uniforms.

While the company manufactures one to two millions yards of fabric a year for shipment to quilt stores around the globe, Michael and Debra state that they are committed to giving back to the employees enaged in producing this cherished fabric. To that end, they have started up a non-profit lending library called Ganesa. Libraries and reading have not traditionally been a part of the Javanese culture, and Michael and Debra have the only library in the area. As librarians, the couple make book recommendations to even the most reluctant of readers. They are in fund raising mode in order to continue to add books to their current catalog of 3,000 titles. So, during the event, half yard samples of their fabric were on sale, with the proceeds benefiting the library. The couple met in a bookstore so it seems appropriate that they should undertake this endeavor. After talking with this amazing pair of artists, it is clear that they live passionate lives. Their zest encompasses their dedication to design, the Indonesian people and their culture and each other. So, the next time you take out your wallet to purchase this staple of the art quilter's supply chest, please take a moment to remember why it may cost just a little more and consider it a bargain.

SAQA 2011 Trunk Show

Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) invites all SAQA members to submit work for its 2011-2012 traveling trunk show. This trunk show is designed to showcase SAQA artists, to help educate the public at large about the art quilt, and to serve as a teaching tool for our members.*Theme:This is a Quilt! How do we as SAQA members explain what we do - create quilts - without people immediately thinking of a nine-patch that goes on your bed? By example, of course! SAQA defines an art quilt as "a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the wholerange of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design,assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, aclear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends." This definition ispurposely broad to accommodate the wondrous and exciting art quilts SAQAmembers are creating.

General:Create one piece that constitutes an art quilt as defined above. All work will be photographed, matted, and prepared for exhibition by SAQA. The SAQA exhibition committee hopes to publish some or all of the quilts in a book exploring the diversity of art quilts. All quilts will be returned to the artist after thetravel schedule has ended.Size:Minimum 9" per side, maximum 11" per side. The pieces will be matted behinda 12" white or off-white mat with an 8" square opening in the center. Only 8" sq.of your quilt will be visible. Because the artwork will be behind a mat, the edges need not be finished. A very small number of three-dimensional pieces may be included. Please contact the curators for details.Statement: Write a statement to the curators explaining why, in your mind, this quilt fits the definition. Why did you choose to create this piece as an art quilt and not in adifferent medium? (200 words maximum). Hello! My name is Sue King and I am your SAQA Ohio Regional Representative. I live in Lancaster in the southeastern region of the state. This brand new blog was created with you in mind. I hope it will be a dynamic place for members to get to know each other and share their ideas and art. Ohio may not be the largest state, but it has wonderful diversity in culture and geography and it is the place we all call home. Our members also have diverse artistic backgrounds and styles. I hope this site will be a place we can celebrate and express our individuality as well as a place to share our artistic voice and spread our love of the quilt as an art form. It would also be a great place to post events in your area of the state so that our members don't miss out on an exciting show, lecture or seminar. I am open to suggestions on how to make this blog and our Ohio organization meet your needs.

When it comes to technology, I'm still in a big learning curve and undoubtedly many of you have valuable knowledge and ideas that would greatly benfit our group, so please don't hesitate to make suggestions or put forward ideas that would make this a better site. One such talented and generous member is Gisela Towner, hailing from North Olmstead. She has graciously volunteered to set up and moderate this blog as well as a new SAQA OHIO Yahoo Group.
